Keeping baby girl away from the boys... The heat is finally over! No, I'm not talking about the heatwave of Summer - that's not even shown itself in British Columbia yet. Brook's heat started May 1st, then her estrus on May 29th. She stopped being physically attracted to the furry males only a couple days ago (June 16). Forty eight days. A month and a half of our lives revolving around those chastity briefs and melted brains. This is going to happen every 6 months? That's 90 days out of 365?? (Give or take, but still...ugh!) It got so bad that we couldn't even put them in the same cabin together…

Socked in Ilgatchuz Mountain Range. The storm clouds came and parked themselves over the Ilgatchuz range; not letting up for days. They still haven't. On average we're getting almost an inch of rain every 24 hours. We've even hit the freezing mark overnight every other day with a frost, the odd hail or snow squall, with the greenhouse wood stove going day & night. This is June in the Chilcotin. Some local first nations have been using the trail from Anahim to Walt's during all the wet weather and have turned our travel route into a trail of mud soup. We were waiting for things to dry up before we…

Just like Mountain Man had predicted, the water receded within a few days; he was more optimistic than I was about it. Together our next guests made their way into the resort following behind the Jeep on quad. The Hoy's have been here several times now, and it's a visit I look forward to. They eat mainly Keto (basically veggies & meat) so they brought in some extra supplies for me. If guests can, I get them to pick up a few things that are their favorite's and I will cook to order. They got some R&R, and then when the urge to do something hit - the guys got…

Leaving the Resort I was pleasantly surprised when I got up that morning; that I actually felt the urge for adventure. The weather was perfect for boating and the whole trip should take no longer than 6 hours (if all goes well). It was the type of day I could open the greenhouse up and as long as I made it home by 6pm to close it up, everything would be alright. To make things even better, Mountain Man headed out across the lake to do a few repairs on the Jeep bright and early, hiked the 2.5km and brought the Jeep right to the shoreline to make it easy…

Tree down in the overflow... Mountain Man is home for a long while now. He made it just on time for Mothers Day. The roads were pretty wet and there was lots of overflow. There’s even a detour on the Kluskus Forest Service rd that goes around a big wash out. Once he got to Walt’s driveway he had to clear about a dozen trees. The frost it out of the ground now, and with it being so wet it only takes a moderate windy day to topple dozens more timbers. The biggest tree laid right in the midst of a big swamp that overflowed onto the road. Looks a…

A silent heat. At least that's what a quick internet search told me. Brook showed no signs of her estrus coming on what-so-ever! It was the males of the household that told me something was up. I've had females before and this event has been on my mind everyday since she hit her 6 month mark (she's now 7 months). Thankfully I never let her out of my sight. She showed signs at 4 months old, and the male dogs also showed interest at that time...but nothing like what they are telling me now! Keeping 3 intact males away from Brook is my new job for the next 18 days…

The room filled with steam as the hot water sprayed over head. I closed my eyes and supported myself with both hands leaning on the confined space of the shower stalls wall. My hair now drenched & dripping; stuck to my body outstretched at it's full two feet in length. I stood there letting the hot water hit every part of my body; taking deep breaths from my pierced lips as the water ran down my face. I turned the hot water tap up a slight bit more until it almost burned, I have 15 minutes of hot water - and I will use every second of it! Six and…

My post starts with peroxide and ends with peroxide. We all know peroxide to be a strong oxidation agent, composed of 2 hydrogen and 2 oxygen atoms, able to kill viruses, bacteria, fungi and useful in various ways. (A great tip for off the grid living is how effective peroxide can be for a toothache!) We stocked up on endless bottles of the stuff years ago, added it to every first aid kit we had, and felt content that we were prepared. Ha...think again! Mountain Man brought a smoked ham home for the Easter holiday we didn't get to share together. (Yes, he's pretty awesome to think of things like…

Heirloom Squash & MelonsWatching plants grow,...literally. It's still the most rewarding thing I currently have in my life. Audio books are my second, and a 'new to me thing'. Don't get me wrong, the dogs are still the highlights in my day, but they can't read. I can simply press play, and someone else reads an entire book to me, without their eyes drying up, burning sore...or without their voice cracking. Sure I miss skimming over the words myself, but with my aging eyes that now need +2.50 cheater glasses to read anything within an arms length; this solves that problem completely. Besides Mountain Man isn't here to take his…

I got the fur kids bellies full with left over pork, heated up with over easy eggs and then mixed it into their dry kibble. (On Mountain Mans last 'visit' home for 2 days (Tues & Wed) we had grilled pork tenderloin). The sun set and our solar panels stopped charging, so around the cabin I went to re-fuel the generator. The dogs rounded up the chickens and pushed them into the coop, I grabbed a scoop of layer pellets and scattered them about inside the pen, collected their eggs and closed the coop door. On the way back in, I grabbed a big 'story time' log for the wood…
