    Eliguk Journal – August 25, 2020.

I know, I know...a week in between posts is getting old! But, I did tell you that we are booked until September 21st? Long gone, are the mornings spent sipping fresh herbal tea, while the sun stretches it's light through the window warming my face - as I tap away on my laptop. I can spend up to 4 hours creating a blog post. It's not just simply typing what's on my mind, or the happenings of the days that passed. It's downloading photos from my phone, saving them to my computer and then trying to sort out the weeks events that flew by. Putting it in the right format…

WELCOME - Finally got the sign painted and posted.....and just like that, the last 6 days flew right by,...well for us anyhow! A day prepping before, and a day cleaning after. We got to spend it with an amazing family from Alberta. The only request they made - before they arrived, was that I don't serve pork. I admit, it had me thinking that it was likely a religious reason. Which is totally fine, but all my staple breakfasts included ham, bacon & pork sausage! I was told they would bring some alternatives for morning protein...so back to menu planning. The plane took 2 trips to bring everyone into Eliguk.…

I never imagined that business would pick up by the end of this Summer, but it has. We are booked as solid as we want to be until the 1st day of Autumn. Some paying guests with friends visiting in between, a perfect mixture. A family is flying by float plane from Alberta this weekend, a last minute booking - and a welcomed one at that! I will piggy back a grocery order on their flight. We've been getting so many odd jobs done over the course of this month. Mountain Man is getting things rolling with the start of the new Lodge. The preparation of it all, is more…

The few hens that can fly out of their pen, roam around the cabin calling out for the humans to come feed them their morning rations. The cold mornings find us both sleeping in, to see if the other will get up and do the first chores of the day. Dogs have been pacing to get outside, coffee pot has to be filled and put on the propane stove, then it's outdoor chores. Chickens need to be let out and fed, then the greenhouse windows need to be opened. I've had my fair share of sleeping in lately, so I crawled out of my heavy comforter, and put my barefoot…

I must have been living with blinders on, head down as I worked away - because when I looked up…it was August! This week has totally slipped by me. Screen door built from scratch. Sunday was a work day. Mountain Man finished building the screen door for the Blackwater Outpost, and I worked for hours in the greenhouse. It was a hot day for outdoor work, as we reached 28C (82.4F). (Need I remind you that anything over 20C (68F) is hot for us). The greenhouse had registered 32C (90F), I used the new Milwaukee Fan to draw the air through and create some air flow. With one battery, that…

Tomatoes have reached the 9 foot roof. It's been unusually cold in British Columbia this year. I'm not sure about other areas, as I do see on my weather radar that Eastern Canada had multiple heat warnings over the last few months. But BC has been wet and cold! I don't mind the cold, and I haven't yet had to water my outdoor potato bed, but a little heat goes a long way in growing a garden,...even in a greenhouse! You still need sunshine, and warmth to get tomato's & peppers ripen. Tomato's prefer a temperature of 21 - 24C (70 - 75F) and will perform poorly at temperatures above…

Ready to fire a warning shot... I had just come down from the greenhouse to make lunch, and was alone at the time. I'm grateful that I didn't run into this curious young male by myself! The picture says it all. Another young Grizzly came into the resort and didn't want to leave. Storm smelled him from inside the cabin, and burst through our screen door to go confront him, as the Grizzly was in the middle of our property, sniffing around the grounds. Mountain Man and Storm worked as a team pushing the bear out of the resort, and when he refused to leave, a warning shot was all…

Mountain Man's voice came over the VHF, "Hey Darlin", he said... "I'm 20 minutes out from reaching the field at Eliguk." (I was so relieved to hear his voice!) "Ok, I'll meet you down there with a boat!", I said. I quickly dressed, in my rain gear (as it was raining). Tied the dogs, and ran down to the docks. Thank goodness the lake was calm! With the hordes of mosquito's that would be at the East end of the lake, I took my time traveling the 4km of lake to where Mountain Man would be parked. As I approached the narrows, a Doe & 2 fawns met me there.…

Well, he did it again! Packed the Jeep and went on a round about, literally! Exiting to the Vanderhoof route and taking truck and trailer to Williams Lake where he dropped the trailer with the last 20' sea can/cargo container purchase. It's the last piece of the puzzle for the base of the new lodge. With this finally in place we can 'break ground' and finally start the build! He drove on, to Kelowna to pick up the tail feathers for his plane (the last pieces he was waiting on). Mind you he's STILL waiting for that welder to show up and weld the frame of the fuselage! I sure…

Drying Horsetail Rain, rain, everywhere! I have seen blue patches of sky periodically, only to be quickly swallowed up by the drab grey clouds unleashing torrential downpours. I have 5 loads of laundry waiting; our clothing - plus all the bedding & towels in the cabins that need to be washed. When you rely on being able to hang your clothes outside to dry, you have to wait for just that...dry days! It's rained every day since the guests left. In between downpours I've been collecting herbs for drying. The rain gives them a good washing, doing half the work for me. My drying rack behind the wood stove dries…
