    Eliguk Journal – August 6th, 2023.

Only a Mountain Man would randomly decide last minute, the evening before, that we would leave first thing in the morning. But here I am trying to catch you up while he's running around me packing! Tuva & VeBjorn, arrived from Norway! Our work-away helpers till mid-August. We feed them and they get a cabin, and in exchange they put in hours a day helping with what needs to be done. And finally, we're getting stuff done! It's more or less a catch-up battle at this point to try and gain some of the month we lost to the fires. (Which are still burning around us!) Well, not our fire.…

As much as it felt like hell at the time; I'd give anything to go back and bitch about 'roughing it' again, digging that potato bed for 2 weeks. We're still not 'out of the woods'! I think the majority of you know what we've been dealing with for the last few weeks. We had a forest fire,... or seven! It was 22 days ago that the worst fire we've seen here, out of several fire seasons; turned our lives completely upside down! To try and make sense out of the last 2-3 weeks is extremely difficult, but I've put all the emails, posts, news casts, photo's and messages together…

Living in the elements... A hot day for the dogs who love to lay down in the cool river. Taking a much deserved break! Sunday was our 'day' (more like afternoon), to escape the resort and go to the River with the dogs. A picnic with a few snacks, a beer to lure all the horseflies and hornets our way. The mosquito's and black flies we are accustomed to now. The river banks seem to be the only really lush 'green' around, as the bush is so incredibly dry. Still no rain in our forecast. Just the threat of looming thunder storms. Sometimes we forget how important it is to…

Ups and downs. Yes, that's life, blah, blah, blah. (Trying to stay positive 😉 Seemingly lately though, we've been on the down. Running a resort, while living far off the grid is not always the reality of how it sounds... 'living the dream'.  It's been blow after blow, and mostly with the float plane. It was scheduled to be in the air last year. But after 4 long Winters of the re-build it's looking dismal. We have a non-airworthy $150,000 real 'life size model' of a float plane, with interchangeable ski's that will never fly! Even the Wright Brothers only took 3 years from blueprints to actual flight. I'll let…

Spinach & Ricotta Stuffed Ravioli with Chicken Breast. When I managed to get out last month, my grocery shopping included some easy to prep meals that I didn't have to make from scratch, like deli style stuffed chicken breasts and store bought ravioli. Kinda makes me feel like take out or a night out even though there's still prep and cooking involved. Mountain Man milled some wood, built a few saw horses, and then started working on his new axle for his home built trailer. The only axle he could find was longer than the trailer, so some customization was what he was doing, along with beefing up the axle…

Sunset over the Resort I know it's too long in-between blog posts, there's no other excuse than it's almost impossible at times to sit down for a half day and inspirationally click away at the keys on my laptop. Photo journalism requires cropping, adjusting, downloading; then transferring them all from my iPhone to my laptop. The Pro Max 12 that my hubby sourced out for my birthday is getting way too much use. I required the 256g memory so that I can stuff it full of photo & video without constantly filling it up. My night time photo's have been stellar, then there's the whole wide angle thing and so…

Exploring the wilderness together is important. Quad exploring day before another trip to the city. Mountain Man made a quick trip into Prince George, wrapping a few things up. He met Rob Phillips at Walts on the way out with a box of plants I started for them to plant in their greenhouse. He had a bit of truck issues again, the back brakes needed replacing, even though he just did them less than a year and a half ago. Then off to town to get all the things picked up that he had purchased and acquired over the last few months. It's been such a blessing that his leg…

Wind blew some ice a shore... There are several things that help 'ease the pain' of the mosquito's arrival. Anyone pioneering it would agree. Running water = showers, open water & the Loons! Even though I've had the opportunity to jump in my wood fired tub when needed, the propane heated shower is much more convenient being fast & easy. It helps with the return of the hot dry weather as we've had thunderstorm after thunderstorm threaten the dry wilderness already! All the work we've been doing outside is at least rewarded with hot running water at the end of the day. When I light my greenhouse fire at night…

I was in the greenhouse working, when the husband briskly walked in, or um... sauntered. "Notice anything?" He asked. It took only moments to realize, he walked the full length of my greenhouse without so much as a hitch in his step. He was elated! I was too, (all though more reserved, as I know he's feeling a little invincible.) As much as I hate to take the wind out of his sails, I still need to be the daily reminder that he needs to slow down a bit and take it day by day; not leaps and bounds the way he feels. Any minor incident can be a major…

Long & uneventful... that's how recovery went. Staying off his feet is torture, so he says. A long incision with a shorter one to the right of it. I plugged along with the same daily chores here at the resort and Mountain Man did his best to stay horizontal. The last few days before he decided it was time to come home, he was fairly mobile. Out for a bit of shopping and supply runs, and tinkering in Attila's shop trying to be of use and bide his time. The determining factor wasn't just his healing process, the weather plays an important role during Spring break-up. We don't call it…
