    Eliguk Journal – Sept 25, 2019.

Are we getting into a routine? I'm still not sure, as it's so different from any one we've ever lived. It's by far the toughest life we've ever lived. Even the dogs know it. They have to patiently wait for Dad to go up and down the stairs with his crutches, before they can proceed. There's no more jumping up for Dads attention while he goes for walks and hikes. Dad can't even bend down and pick up the stick that Storm has laid at his feet. Things have changed. To top it off, one of his quad tires got a long slash in it and went flat. No there's…

    Eliguk Journal – Sept 23, 2019.

...And just like that, a miracle happened! Several trucks made their way from Prince George & Vanderhoof to the trail head, unloaded 9 quads and traveled up to 7 hours to get to Eliguk Lake. The same group that had stopped by while out venturing 2 days after Mountain Man had broke his ankle. They vowed they would come back to help us Winterize and boy, did they ever! This time one of them brought their son, Dale...a good long time buddy of our Mountain Man. They arrived on Friday at noon (yes, they left at 5am!) They didn't take time out for anything, it was an immediate scheduled…

I'm talkin' Tomatoes...because I have to! There are soooo many! But what do you do with all of them besides the regular canning, salsa etc? Well the time of the year it is, the greenhouse is not as hot as it should be and it's not as sunny as I'd like it to be. The tomatoes ripen faster in a shallow covered cardboard box, because they emit a gas as they ripen and ripe ones encourage others to ripen. People think that putting them on a window sill in the sun ripens them, but it's not actually the sun that does it. In fact when left in the direct sunlight…

    Eliguk Journal – Sept 17, 2019.

…15-8 and 2 pair is a dozen. I pegged 8 on the count, 24 in my hand and a dozen in my crib! I finally pulled way out ahead with a 40 point lead. I had lost every time we played Cribbage this month, but this game was mine! The rain pounded on the cabin roof as we enjoyed our Caesar Sunday afternoon. I had just pulled the bed sheets off the clothesline, great timing! We were socked in with grey skies. Thunder echoed way off towards the West. Mountain Man was shuffling the cards when our heads cocked sideways as we stared at each other, trying to pinpoint the…

    Eliguk Journal – Sept 15, 2019.

I'd say it cost me! That afternoon when I caught up on a bit of writing for the blog, was time I should have spent cutting wood. I had just loaded the guest cabin deck with wood 2 days before and cut a large box of kindling, even twisted a box of newspaper and neatly tucked it into a box all standing on end so it was displayed nice and easily accessed. After all, these guys aren't 'bush capable'. I had enough kindling that it should have lasted them 2 weeks. It's not like they communicated anything to me during lunch. They have their nap after their bellies are full…

MM's Caesar WW - "Can I get you anything?" MM - "I could use another pillow, and could you hand me my glasses?" MM - "I want to draw, can you get my graph paper, a pencil, eraser and a ruler?" MM - "I'm kind of in the mood for one of those Caesars you make... WW - "Sure, no problem." MM - "But only if it comes with that little stick full of snacks". MM - "What's for dinner?" WW - "Leftover Lasagna, I haven't had time to cook...(gets cut off by MM) MM - "I'm not eating Lasagna again." WW - *bites lips and narrows eyes into a…

A Series of Misfortunate Events – Part 4

Up till 1am baking. I had no problem sleeping with a cabin full of fresh bread aroma. Before coffee was even a thought, I lit the propane gas tank on the Angler cabin's deck. I unlocked the chicken coop where half the chickens were still waiting inside - as they are the ones that can't fly over the fence. They impatiently throw themselves against the door of the coop when they hear me approach. I've learned to open the metal can and grab a big scoop of layer pellets before I open the door - or they will just fly up onto my back, head and arms while I try…

A Series of Misfortunate Events – Part 3

Knowing that Mountain Man was on his way to a hospital, (that had everything lined up for him) gave me some much needed peace of mind. Also having family friends there to meet him off the plane, and take him to the hospital was an extra sense of security. A CT scan was booked for him upon arrival, something critical for the surgeon's needs. He had been fasting since midnight before leaving Eliguk in case they could do surgery right away. He was to be on stand-by for surgery right after the scan. I had to get myself back together mentally, and prepare for 16 dirt bikers coming through the…

A Series of Misfortunate Events – Part 2

Then the tears came...and I cried. I cried so hard I'm sure the Americans at the end of the lake in the cabin could have heard me. Trying to fathom the next few months with a casted, stubborn, Viking husband - living off the grid, not even able to pace like a caged lion. Life just anteed up it's stakes in the survival challenge game. Flashes of thoughts overcame my mind. Winters coming, how will we get all our wood? Now we can't finish burying all our water lines before the snow comes! Our build of the Lodge foundation will be stalled again! How will we get supplies in? I…
