    Eliguk Journal – July 26, 2019.

It's been several days since I've been able to sit and be at one with my keyboard in our wilderness silence. Planes seem to be landing every morning, and Herb is here for a while which means coffee is on earlier than normal and full breakfasts are being made. The planes landing are from another lodge in Nimpo Lake that brings clients out here day fishing. Our lake is so full of the fighting rainbows that it's the best place to go to catch lots of fish. One problem we've been having is when the big Beaver float plane lands and takes off, it does so 'full throttle' as close…

It's been a busy few days getting some much needed yard work done. We started our yard work first thing in the morning to try and beat the heat of the day. It was operation stump removal - then fill with topsoil - then grass cutting to see if there was any other rock/stump removal needed in the front yard. With all the moisture the past month we haven't been able to cut grass and it's a few feet long! The big trees on the waterfront were cut down well over a decade ago and when they were still alive. The scare of the pine beetle kill had the last…

High winds have been with us the last few days, along with the intermittent rain. It's a good combination to dry things out fast but a dangerous one for falling dead pine. The soil is wet and it causes the trees to easily fall over on a windy day, as there's nothing for the roots to hang on to. The 2 Mountain Men found themselves with a day of clearing, it was nice to have the help! After clearing a few around the resort they decided to head out and clear the 40km of trail to the East along the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail. So they were gone for at…

We got a call Monday night, it was Herb. He was itching to pick mushrooms again down the Blackwater. He spent days on his boat out on the Ocean fishing and needed to rest his sea legs. It was just the call Mountain Man needed to save him a trip to town just for Diesel fuel for the Excavator. He's been digging for a while to be able to get the sea can's placed in their foundation spot. The beauty of all that digging is the 75 loads of fill he has unearthed so far. We have found spot after spot for the wonderful stuff! Re-surfaced the driveway and some…

A day in the life of a Wilderness Woman. I woke up at 7am realizing I had put my mixed bread dough in the refrigerator. I didn't get to mixing it until late last night, and it was bacon and egg day morning here at the Outpost. I quickly took the dough out of the fridge and warmed it up to rise in my oven. Started the coffee to percolate and dashed out to let the chickens free. They always have their little door to the pen open and can forage out there at anytime, but they are looking for their ration of layer pellets. They throw themselves against the…

Learning as you go. If your not constantly learning and adapting to your surroundings then you are definitely stuck in a rut - 'so to speak'. I don't care how old you get, learning and absorbing new knowledge is something that should never end. When I was stuck in my daily city grind lifestyle career, it was important to me to learn something new everyday...and it was mostly from reading books. Now I'm 'hands-on' learning things everyday. It's rewarding for me to be able to have the time to explore new things and absorb all the information that goes along with it. It's environmentally and economically challenging but, living 'Off…

    Website Changes…

I know, I know...change. Most people don't like to go there! This one's for the better and will make life easier for me. Jetpack, a widget I used for this website to send you notification emails when I write a new post, and the same widget that gave us our 'community' at the bottom of the page is now not working and creating so many headaches for me and my provider. It's causing more downtime than I can say it's worth. It may work on some websites better than others in conjunction with other widgets and their compatibility with one another. So we are going to see what life is…

2016, our first year out here was the highest flood the area had seen in 50 years. I'm sure you've all read the story on the Blog page, 'Project Fish Bone' by now? Now the Cariboo-Chilcotin is on alert as the Chilcotin River has breached it's banks by hundreds of feet and flooded out homes & ranches. They are saying this area hasn't flooded like this in 200 years! 2016 - Flood, 2017 - Forest Fires, 2018 - Forest Fires, 2019 - Flood. It makes me wonder what a normal year out in the wilderness would be like? I'm not even sure what normal is? A balance of nature would…

The morning that mushroom picker Herb left, we spent most of the day breaking ground for the new Lodge. There's plenty of spots to put all the topsoil that's getting dug out. Most of our 80' - 100' tall Pine and Spruce trees all have exposed roots and are easily tripped on just walking around the resort. Plus they up-root easily and I'm sure don't get the required hydration they need. It was a no-brainer doing this to prolong their existence a few more decades and make them safer to be around. The before and after pictures are great! Although the chickens will miss their dust bathing grounds, there are…

Herb stuck around for a few days so we took advantage of that and decided to make a fuel supply run while we could, without the dogs. It sure makes for a calmer ride in and out of the bush! I can actually get to town without all the muddy paw prints and hair covered clothes! The trails are iffy for doing the haul with the truck, but there's nothing but rain in the 10 day forecast - so it's now or never! It's a risk we must take as we are on our last propane tank here. We are bringing in 6 - 100lb tanks and some gas cans.…
