    Eliguk Journal – April 20, 2019.

Happy Easter weekend. The Easter Bunny left us with colored eggs already. Massive amounts of them. Yes, I have too many chickens! That's what happens when you get addicted to hatching eggs. The chicks are so cute and you wonder what they will look like when they grow up. Some how I can't part with them. These are the consequences. My hen's aren't really the eating dual/purpose type. Sure we eat the Roosters as they don't spend all their energy laying eggs. But the hens, once they start laying are more invaluable to just have one meal from. After making everything I could make with eggs, the best thing to…

So we've decided it was a genius move to start posting things like we did yesterday on FaceBook about "How long will it take Mountain Man to cut this wood?" Holding a contest there for members only and then reveal the video a few days later, announcing a winner. It created a few new immediate sign-ups! I need to use FB to continue to grow this site, it's one of the best tools available and that's where my followers come from. We figure if we hold a contest there once a month it will help keep this online adventure going. I'm sure we can come up with some very interesting…

My back can't take it anymore! We are both walking around hunched over like we broke out of the geriatric ward on a weekend pass. Our main conversations are about who is in more pain than the other. I need a day off raking and hauling wood to the fire. I know this because I can't bend over well enough to put my under wear on, and when I do...I tip over! Don't even ask how I manage socks. Upon entering our cabin after a full afternoon of working, there's still work to do...for me. Fetch water, clean up the lunch dishes - while I make drinks and dinner. Then…

It's almost been 2 weeks since this website has taken over my FaceBook feeds. It's been a bit more relaxing for me as my phone's not constantly beeping alerting me to all the social media comments. I have been able to spend more time writing and feeling a little more purpose in life than usual. Mountain Man made a discovery a few weeks ago that put us in a pretty scary predicament. Something that all off gridders should know...he wrote about it in his entry about Propane Safety (click to be redirected to that story). It was part of the reason he made a sketchy journey into town to pick…

Mountain Man has been testing the lake ice everyday. When I say 'testing', I mean he walks out takes a couple wacks at it with an axe, and then drives his quad 1km across the stuff I won't even walk on! That's the difference between this Wilderness Woman and her Mountain Man. The edge of the lake has thawed and It's almost impossible to get a quad up onto the frozen shelf that's left there. It's rotting fast and chunks just break off. I've already told him if I see his quad go through the lake, I'm not coming to rescue him. "That's fine", he says..."I wouldn't want you to".…

I now have a 3 layer blister. Which meant I was raking, yet again. Of course I wear gloves and try and hold the rake in several different positions. Our Mountain Man spent the whole day building the East wall of the Greenhouse. Any of the posts that pertain to that build you will find under the `Off Grid Living`tab or just click this link to quickly get there Greenhouse Build. He does such beautiful work and its amazing to watch him go! We`ve had no precipitation in the last 50 days. So with the dry grounds and high winds I have been hesitant to let my fire get too…

It's going to be hard to shake this Winter routine and switch it out for a faster paced Summer one. The sun comes up much earlier and the dogs are waking up before we do now, to let us know about it. If I'm not in a deep sleep I can hear the odd rooster struggle to put a cock-a-doodle-do together past his crow collar, and alert me to the pending daylight. Mountain Man and I laugh now when they crow because it sounds like they are trying to say YAA-HOO! Just like a cowboy in the middle of a bucking bronc ride! Instead of their trademark call. Makes us…

Happy Sunday! I know it's Sunday because it's our weekly traditional Bacon & Egg breakfast for Mountain Man and his BFF's - his sidekicks/fur kids, Storm & Forrest. Not one of them would ever let me forget it, lol! Since we have plenty of eggs around here the dogs get 3 each, sunny side up, just the way their Dad likes them too. It's a day of planning ahead and reminiscing over the week that flew by. Staying on schedule and creating a work week routine for our 'self-disciplined' lifestyle. If you don't stick to setting goals of normal everyday duties and such, it is very possible to just end…

As I sit here in my quiet log cabin typing away on my Acer laptop I can hear the distant hum of a chainsaw, with that knowing that Mountain Man is out there working. I can see him adding to his fire as smoke rises up into the sky from the East side of the Resort. The chickens are clucking away laying their usual dozen eggs a day, leaving me to forever contemplate the 100 ways I need to utilize the resources they are providing us. It was a sleep-in day. By sleeping in, I mean that I laid in bed until the sun came up and it was so…
